UDUYARS SYMPOSIUM

The Usmanu Danfodiyo University Young Antimicrobial Resistance Stewards (UDUYARS) convened the largest student-led symposium on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
Held under the theme “Uniting Forces: Bridging Science, Art, and Society in the Fight Against Antimicrobial Resistance through One Health,” the symposium provided a multi-sectoral platform for collaboration, knowledge exchange, and innovation.

The event gathered about 600 participants including researchers, faculty members, health professionals, policymakers, creatives, and students  to examine the interconnected dimensions of AMR across human, animal, and environmental health systems.

The symposium fostered interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together renowned professors, doctors, policymakers, and youth leaders who shared knowledge, discussed innovative strategies, and highlighted the importance of collective action in combating AMR across humans, animals, and the environment.

In alignment with our belief that young people are central to solving global health challenges, the symposium spotlighted youth-led creativity in science communication through an AMR Essay Competition, which received dozens of submissions from students who came across Nigeria’s geopolitical zones.

Six outstanding essayists were awarded certificates and prizes for their remarkable research and insight. Secondary school students also showcased their talents through creative performances, demonstrating how art can be a powerful vehicle for scientific advocacy

Post-Symposium Engagements

Following the main event, UDUYARS hosted youth-focused side events and strategy sessions to sustain the momentum. These sessions provided young leaders with practical frameworks to harmonize campus and community efforts against AMR, advancing the One Health vision beyond the university environment.

The outcomes from these sessions included actionable recommendations, mentorship connections, and collaborative commitments for ongoing community-driven AMR education across Sokoto State and beyond.

Looking Ahead

The success of the AMR Symposium reinforces UDUYARS’ commitment to bridging science, art, and society in tackling global health threats.
As we look to future editions, our goal is to scale the symposium into a national youth-led movement, one that continues to empower young professionals, amplify local innovations, and strengthen the One Health network across Nigeria and Africa.

We invite partners, mentors, and organisations passionate about youth leadership, public health, and antimicrobial resistance to join us in expanding this transformative platform.
